      From what i understood, it qualifies people who do no show their enjoyment in their voice. Not by hiding it like for a kuudere, just that the person is not very expressive. Even in intimate places.

      This can be interpreted as someone who has a low morale or is not emotionally related to the subject, and shots down the “intensity” of your speech by creating a contrast with your way of speeking. Thus, “downer” means to shot down people speech intensity, or just kills the mood when people speak loudly.

      To understand this better, you can imagine someone a bit annoyed about something which is not really essential, like “couldn’t eat because the queue at McDonald is too long” and his friend being like “ok”. It would feel like the angry one is being ignored by his friend, but if the friend is a natural “downer”, then “ok” probably means “i agree” instead of “i don’t care”.

      From what I think (I could be wrong), the word “downer” is probably linked to the strict social rules in Japan, where friends can show emotion when speaking with each other but not with strangers, and would probably feel frustrated by being frequently toned down if their friend didn’t show the same emotion when speaking. They would probably feel like they are not considered as friend or their friend does not care about them. “Downer” people would be treated as people who kill the mood.

      Or you can just compare it to the difference between porn/hentai where women scream when they feel good, because in reality they are as silent as you. If you don’t know what i’m talking about, check some femdom porn (not gay, but often adressed to women). It feels really weird when guys scream in porn.
